BMW Concentrating on the Site Options Possible Sites for the New BMW Group Factory Inside and Outside Germany

Munich, Germany - The intensive preparatory work of recent weeks on the choice of location for the new BMW Group factory has reached a critical interim result. The BMW Group is now concentrating on five inside and outside Germany.

The locations are in the former East Germany (Leipzig, Schwerin) and former West Germany (Augsburg), the Czech Republic (Kolin) and France (Arras).

The Group is planning to build a factory with a daily production capacity of some 600 cars. Investments totaling up to a billion euros are proposed. Production in the factory would be started in the year 2004. Under the current plans, the factory would manufacture vehicles in the BMW 3 Series.

In the medium term, up to 10,000 jobs would be created at the new location by the BMW Group and its suppliers.

Over the next few weeks, further analyses and detail work will be carried out in cooperation with the locations themselves. The aim is still to make the final location decision for the new BMW Group factory by the end of July.

The location will be selected solely on the basis of the criteria laid down by the BMW Group. Priority goes to traffic connections, the availability of staff, the attractiveness of the local market and the overall costs aspect.
