Nissan Establishing New South Carolina Parts Center; Distribution Center in Greenville Opens in Spring

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Nissan North America announced it will establish a new Parts Distribution Center (PDC) in Greenville, S.C., as part of the automaker's expansion in the United States aimed at creating lasting, profitable growth worldwide.

Nissan will invest about $4 million in the center housed in a leased 186,290 square-foot building situated on 14.69 acres in upstate South Carolina. Nissan's decision to select the site resulted from a number of factors, including strong support received from the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the Greenville Area Development Corporation. The new center is expected to employ about 45 people when it opens in April.

"We are in the midst of a significant expansion in the United States and this center will help us more efficiently meet the needs of Nissan and Infiniti dealers in the mid-Atlantic area," said Bill Bosley, Nissan's vice president for customer service. "As part of our worldwide drive to establish a lasting, profitable growth for Nissan, we plan to increase U.S. production and sales over the next several years, creating the need for this center." "We celebrate Nissan's contribution to the Upstate today," said South Carolina Gov. Jim Hodges, who spoke at a news conference at the site today. "The new jobs Nissan has created will continue our state's reputation as an investment magnet for additional quality industries."

The new PDC in Greenville will:

Reduce parts distribution time and costs.
Service dealers in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, eastern Tennessee and northern Georgia. Dealers in these areas are being serviced by PDCs in Jacksonville, Fla., Somerset, N.J., and Memphis, Tenn.
Handle about 50,000 fast- and intermediate-demand parts numbers.
Include about 8,500 square feet of office space.
Use 16 shipping and receiving doors and three drive-through doors.

Nissan currently has eight PDCs in the United States, servicing about 1,100 Nissan dealers and about 150 Infiniti dealers for fast- and intermediate-demand parts numbers and a Master PDC handling Nissan's slower-demand parts.

The Mid-Atlantic PDC is the latest in a series of moves to expand Nissan's business presence in the United States, including:

n A four-year, $1 billion program now under way to expand engine production capabilities in Decherd, Tenn., and to maximize vehicle production capacity in Smyrna, Tenn., including the addition of Nissan Maxima production beginning in January 2003.

n A $930 million assembly plant being constructed in Canton, Miss., to build a full-size pickup truck, a full-size sport-utility vehicle and a new minivan beginning in mid-2003.

n A new 268,000 square foot service center for Nissan Motor Acceptance Corp. in Irvine, Texas.

Assisting Nissan in researching and selecting the Greenville site for the new PDC were The Staubach Company and McCallum Sweeney Consulting. The developer is Pattillo Properties with construction services provided by Potter-Shackelford.
